TYPES OF BREAKS :- A break is a device by means of which artificial frictional resistance is applied to a moving machine member, in order to retard or stop the motion of a machine. In the process of performing this function, the break absorbs either kinetic energy of the moving member or potential energy given up by objects being lowered by hoists, elevators etc., The energy absorbed by breaks is dissipated in the surroundings air which is circulated through the passages in the break drum. so that excessive heating of the break lining does not take place. Not only for motors breaks are also applicable for gears, pulleys, belts, chains, and other rotating devices. There are several types of mechanical brakes the following are are commonly used
Disc breaks
When you apply disc brakes the action of calipers to squeeze pairs of pads against a disc in order to create friction that developed friction slow downs the rotation of a shaft, such as a vehicle axle which helps us stopping the vehicle. In disc breaks the discs are made of gray cast Iron and the brake pressure in case of disc brakes have to be much lighter than the drum brakes.

Drum breaks
Drum breaks are commonly used on automobile rear wheels,it works on the same principle as disc brakes. When the pedal is pressed the cam moves the shoes outwards through linkages, there by coming in frictional contact with the rotating drum. As soon as the brake pedal is released the retaining springs help the brake shoes to brought back and release the brakes.
