Different Types Of Automobiles

There are many different types of automobiles and can be divided based on many criteria. You can find the different types of automobiles in the below areas.

1. Based on Purpose –

Passenger vehicles: Passenger vehicles are used primarily for transportation of passengers, as the name itself indicates it. Buses, cars, autos, trains and auto rickshaws come under this category.

Goods vehicles: Goods vehicles are primarily used for transportation of goods from one place to another place. The delivery of the goods must be in time and no damages must be incurred. Lorries, Material carriers comes under this category.

Special Purpose: Special purpose vehicles are used only in certain times. This special purpose vehicle comes under emergency times, recession times and much more.

2. Based on Load Capacity –

Light-duty vehicles: Light duty vehicles like scooter, bikes, autos, cars and much more.

Heavy duty vehicle: Heavy duty vehicles like Trucks, Lorries, Tractors and many more.

3. Based on fuel used –

Petrol engine vehicles : Vehicles that use petrol as type of fuel consumption. Bikes, some cars comes under this category.

Diesel engine vehicles : Vehicles that use Diesel as type of fuel consumption. Many buses, trucks and cars comes under this category.

Gas vehicles : Vehicles that use gases as type of fuel consumption. Turbine powered cars comes under this category.

Electric vehicles : Vehicles that use electric current as a type of fuel consumption. Electric cars, electric bikes and electric buses comes under this category.

Steam Engine vehicles : Vehicles that use steam as a type of fuel consumption. Steam boats, steam locomotives, steam jets comes under this category.

4. Based on Drive of the vehicles –

Left Hand drive : When the steering wheel is fitted to the left hand, this type of vehicle is called Left hand drive vehicle.

Right Hand drive : When the steering wheel is fitted to the right hand, this type of vehicle is called Right hand drive vehicle.

5. Based on number of wheels and axles –

Two wheelers : Many motor cycles, bikes, bicycles and many more come under this category.

Three wheelers : Many Auto rickshaws, auto’s and special three wheelers come under this category.

Four wheelers : Cars, Buses, Jeeps and many trucks comes under this category.

Six wheelers : Many buses and trucks are equipped with six wheels. Two wheels on the front and the four wheels on the back. Four wheels help to balance and control the acceleration and disturbances when carrying huge loads.

Six axle wheelers : Dodge vehilces like the type transporting huge vehicles in it.

More than six wheelers : Many special purpose vehicles are employed only for special purposes.

6. Based on type of transmission –

Automatic transmission vehicles- Vehicles that are capable of changing gears automatically with respect to the speed are known as Automatic Transmission vehicles. Many Nissan, Skoda, Oddy, BMW cars comes under this category.

Manual transmission vehicles- Vehicles that are not capable of changing gears automatically with respect to the speed are known as Manual Transmission vehicles. Many Maruti and Tata cars comes under this category.

Semi-automatic transmission vehicles- Vehicles that can transmit or change gears manually by changing with clutch are known as Semi automatic transmission vehicles.

7. Based on Suspension system used in vehicles –

Convectional system – Leaf Spring type of suspension system.

Independent system – Coil spring and Pneumatic type of suspension system.

8. According to the position of the engine-

Front- When the engine is loaded on the front side of the vehicle, it is known as Front positioned vehicle.

Rear- When the is loaded on the rear side of the vehicle, it is known as Rear positioned vehicle.
