Different Types Of Fluids

Matter is broadly divided into gases, liquids, solids, plasma and Bose – Einstein Condensates. But when they are broadly descried, they are classified into the following types.

  1. Amorphous solids
  2. Super – critical fluids
  3. Degenerate matter
  4. Super fluid
  5. Bose – Einstein Condensate
  6. Jahn – Teller Metals
  7. Photonic Matter
  8. Disordered hyper uniformity
  9. String – Net liquid
  10. Quark – Gluon Plasma

Most of the people only know about the five normal divisions of matter. But these are the actual divisions of matter as of today. But today we talk about fluids. Gases and liquids are together known as fluids. There are basically five types of fluids. They are as follows –

  1. Ideal Fluid – A fluid that can neither be compressed nor has viscosity comes under the ideal fluid category. In the real world, you can never find any ideal fluid as it is completely imaginary. There can really never exist as a fluid with the characteristics and properties of an ideal fluid. This has been imagined only as a reference to other fluids so that they can compare any fluid with the ideal fluid and know its effectively accordingly.
  2. Newtonian Fluid – When a fluid obeys Newton’s law of viscosity, the fluid is known to be Newtonian fluid. Newton’s law of viscosity states that the shear stress is directly proportional to shear strain. There are many examples of Newtonian Fluids and some of them are slurries, gels, colloids, suspensions and many more.
  3. Real Fluid – A fluid is said to be Real fluid only if the fluid exhibits some viscosity. In the real world, when you consider any fluid as an example, it exhibits some viscosity. There may be differences in the viscosity of the fluids but each and every fluid will exhibit the property of viscosity. So all the fluids that we see in the real life are known to be Real fluids. There are many examples of real fluids in the real world and some of them are Kerosene, castor oil, diesel, crude oil, petrol and many more.
  4. Non – Newtonian Fluid – When a fluid obeys Newton’s law of viscosity, it is said to be Newtonian Fluid and the same way when a fluid does not obey Newton’s law of viscosity, it is said to be Non – Newtonian fluid. There are many examples of non Newtonian fluids and some of them are toothpaste, blood, ketchup, shampoo and many more.
  5. Ideal Plastic Fluid – Before you known about Ideal Plastic Fluid, you need to know about velocity gradient. Velocity gradient is said to be existed only when the shear stress is directly proportional to shear strain. When a fluid has a shear stress value larger than the yield value and observed to obey the velocity gradient, then the fluid is said to be Ideal Plastic Fluid. There are many examples of ideal plastic fluids and some of them include thixotrophic jelly paints, ideal plastic, bingham plastic, pseudo plastic ( A mixture of clay, milk and cement ), dilatants substance and many more.
